Dermal Filler

As we age, our skin is susceptible to wrinkling and sagging.  Our skin gradually thins and loses elasticity through the diminishment of dermal collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA), and elastin.  This aging process is accelerated by sun damage and other extrinsic factors such as smoking which contribute to tissue breakdown of the skin. This becomes evident with facial volume loss and laxity.  As facial contours change with age, treatment with dermal filler is beneficial for facial sculpting and contouring.

What is Dermal Filler?

Dermal filler is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring substance found within our body that contributes to volume and hydration.  Dermal filler temporarily augments facial contours by filling any volume deficits while correcting and smoothing any deep wrinkles for a natural-looking result.

How is Dermal Filler injected?

Once you have completed a consultation with one of our medical practitioners, the treatment area is prepped and injected with either a fine needle or a cannula, dependent on safety, preference, and location of treatment.  At Kontour Medical Aesthetics Inc., we use a Canadian, FDA approved dermal filler that has used science, research, and the highest form of technology to create an extremely safe product, providing the best and natural looking result with minimal adverse effects.

TREATMENT AREAS WITH DERMAL FILLER

Pre-Procedure Care

  • Avoid taking NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) medications (e.g. Ibprofen, Aleve, Motrin), Aspirin, Vitamin E, St. John’s wort, and other dietary supplements including gingko, evening primrose oil, garlic, feverfew and ginseng at least 3 days prior to your treatment date (if appropriate – please discuss with your health care provider before discontinuing)
  • Discontinue any alcohol consumption at least 3 days before treatment
  • Notify your practitioner if you have a history of labial or facial herpes as a prophylactic antiviral medication can be taken 2 days prior to the procedure date and continue for 3 days post-procedure

Post-Procedure Care

With all Dermal Filler, you will see immediate results.  Therefore, you will experience temporary:

  • Swelling (for 2-4 days)
  • Bruising (for 3-7 days)
  • Soreness on and around the treated area (1-2 days)
  • Please ensure you notify your practitioner if any complications do not resolve within this time frame.

On the day of your treatment:

  • Apply a wrapped ice pack to treatment areas for 10-15 minutes a few times throughout the day and continue for 1-3 days, or until swelling and bruising has resolved
  • Avoid massages, facials or activities that can manipulate the treated areas or cause facial flushing (exercising, tanning, application of heat to the face, alcohol consumption) to reduce the likelihood of product migration and risk of side effects until swelling resolves
  • Tylenol (Acetaminophen) can be used if needed to relieve discomfort
  • Elevate your head with pillows overnight to reduce swelling
